On October 6, Legacy honored this year's scholarship recipient, Christian Johnson. Christian is a senior at UAB studying kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science. He chose UAB for its strong reputation in health sciences and the opportunity to play baseball for the Blazers. However, after graduating high school in 2019, Christian was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays and chose to pursue professional baseball. He spent nearly four years in the minor leagues before returning to UAB to finish his education. Christian plans to graduate from UAB in May 2027 and attend physical therapy school to earn his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

Beyond his academic achievements, Christian is actively involved in several student organizations and community programs. He serves as a team leader with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a member of the Society of Kinesiology, Student Veterans Association, IGNITE, and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Christian also works in UAB’s Veteran Services, where he supports student veterans and their dependents. As the son of a veteran, he says, “I appreciate the opportunity to support other military families.” Outside of UAB, Christian coaches at KidStrong, a science-based children’s training program focused on building strong, confident, and high-character kids. He describes this work as “rewarding.”

When asked, “What does it mean to Craft a Legacy for you?” Christian shared a thoughtful perspective on character and service. “Crafting a legacy starts with the example you set at home, work, and in your community. Legacy is what people say about your character when you aren’t in the room. It is the standard you live by every day.” Christian credits both his faith and his family with teaching him to serve others and use the opportunities he has been given with purpose.

Christian says he’s grateful to receive the Craft Your Legacy Scholarship, especially as he balances the demands of work and school. Reflecting on his time in professional baseball, he explained, "Although I played professional baseball, minor league pay was limited, and I still needed help from my parents at times.” He also shared, “Since coming back to UAB, I have worked two jobs to help pay my bills while going to school. This scholarship takes some of that pressure off and allows me to focus on my education.”

Through his commitment to academics, service, and personal growth, Christian exemplifies the spirit of the Craft Your Legacy Scholarship. Legacy Credit Union is proud to support students who are building a strong foundation for their futures and making a positive difference in our community.
