Her 10 Money Principles to Live By:

  1. Follow a budget. Live beneath your means.

  2. Create a budget for yourself and always try to spend less money than you may have.

  3. Be debt free. Pay cards in full.

  4. Make sure to pay all credit cards in full when they are due and try to be as debt free as possible.

  5. Have an emergency savings account.

  6. Try and create a savings account that you can build on in case of emergencies. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

  7. Negotiate salary.

  8. Don’t be afraid to negotiate a salary with a future employer and know your worth. Don’t be skipped out on money you could’ve been earning.

  9. Save for retirement-now.

  10. I know you may be thinking that retirement is a million years away, but it’s always best to start saving as early as possible rather than later. The more money you have saved up the sooner you’ll get to retire.

Originally from New Orleans, LA, Alana Baumann is currently a junior attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham majoring in Accounting and minoring in Marketing. She is actively involved in the UAB community as a Resident Assistant, Her Campus Correspondent, Black Student Awareness Committee member, and member of the National Association for Black Accountants. She is currently a Marketing Intern for Legacy Community Federal Credit Union. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family, reading, and going on adventures with her friends.
