When you first start your college career, one of the first things you need to do is research the available banks and credit unions located in the area. In Birmingham, there are a multitude of financial institutions that you can sign up with to fulfill your financial needs. Here at Legacy Community Federal Credit Union, we offer a program that sets us apart from other financial institutions and offer a checking account specifically designed for students known as Blazer Banking. Now, you may be asking yourself, what is Blazer Banking and how is it different from a normal checking account? Blazer Banking is a free student checking account specifically targeted towards UAB students and offers services to university students in the surrounding Birmingham area. It is a great way to get started in building your own credit history while in school. It also provides opportunities, rewards, and services specially crafted for students. Here are a few facts on Blazer Banking and Legacy:
  • Perks of joining a credit union versus a bank

    • First off, what’s the difference between a bank and a credit union? In short, both are financial institutions; however, a bank is government regulated, licensed to receive deposits, make loans, and are for profit. A credit union, on the other hand, is a not-for-profit organization that exists to serve their members and are owned by its members, not stakeholders.

    • The power is more in your hands.

      • In a credit union, the members control all deciding factors that affect the institution.

      • Members are not only customers, but also the owners at the same time.

  • Specific perks when you become a member with Legacy

    • When you become a member with Legacy and open an account, you can receive

    • No Minimum Balance. No Monthly Fee.

  • Parental Control

    • Blazer Banking allows parents to be involved hands on in their banking experience while allowing them freedom in their initial financial experience.

    • Joint ownership allows access for parents to be able to view their students account and deposit funds.

Blazer Banking makes financing for students easier to learn and manage. It is also useful in allowing parents to easily deposit funds into their child’s account while also aiding their child in the initial steps of having their first account.
