In May of 2022, Legacy Credit Union announced a partnership with the UAB Alumni Society to launch the Craft Your Legacy Scholarship. This $2,500 scholarship would be awarded to one UAB undergraduate or graduate student looking to further their education.

Today, we are pleased to announce Julia Andres as the recipient of the first ever Craft Your Legacy Scholarship. Julia is a junior from Shelbyville, Tennessee studying Kinesiology in UAB’s College of Education. Julia played college soccer at Columbia State Community College in Columbia, Tennessee and at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee where she was named Captain before transferring to UAB. Upon graduation, Julia would like to attend Physical Therapy school with the hopes of becoming a Physical Therapist. She also hopes to remain active as an alumnae of UAB by attending alumni events and mentoring future students.

During the application process, candidates were asked “What does ‘Legacy’ mean to you? What do you want your Legacy to be?” Julia said that many people associate the word with “death, inheritance, and material possessions.” But for her she believes that legacy is about “life and living and caring about our world during our lifetime.” As a first generation college student, she wants her legacy to encourage other first generational students to “pursue their dreams even when they seem impossible.” Julia also expressed her passion for leading and encouraging people to do their best. She believes that this trait is the reason she was chosen to be Captain of her soccer team while at Colombia State CC and Bryan College.

“It has been our vision for nearly seven decades to meet the financial needs of UAB’s faculty, staff, students, and alumni in ways that go far beyond just a loan or a checking account” said Legacy CEO and President, S. Glenn Bryan. “As a first-generation college student, Julia embodies what it means to craft a legacy, and we look forward to seeing her excel as she continues her education at UAB.”

Along with the Craft Your Legacy Scholarship, Legacy Credit Union also sponsors the UAB National Alumni Society’s Growing Up Green & Gold program. The National Alumni Society helps celebrate the important milestones for children and grandchildren of UAB Alumni. From the moment they’re born until they are 16-years-old, the Alumni Society will celebrate birthdays with Blazer Birthday cards, giving biennial gifts, and inviting participants to many UAB events. This allows children to be engaged with the university as well as a local financial institution.
